Interesting perspective to the Pinochet regime. I do not defend him or his dictatorship but in the 1970s and 80s he became this bizarre boogeyman for many leftists (in the same way Russia's Vladimir Putin has became for the modern-day left). So much so, that in fact, a study of news-media coverage on dictatorial regimes around the world in the late-1970s found that human rights abuses with regards to Pinochet's Chile were what was vastly dominating American television screens most of the time. Meanwhile, they were totally ignoring the horrendous genocide and holocaust that was going on in Khmer Rouge Cambodia, which was much more bloody, extensive and destructive on Cambodian society (I bring this up because my girlfriend is the daughter of Khmer Rouge genocide survivors). Pinochet's regime killed about 3,800 people out of a population of about 15 million. Marshall Choibalsan in Communist Mongolia killed about 3 to 5 percent out of a population of 700,000-800,000 (or 30-35,000) although one estimate from the Presidential Commission for the Study of the Repression estimated that 100,000 people were killed in Choibalsan's terror...


When it comes to moral judgement, leftist always feel in a superior level. Seems like everybody have to forgive their atrocities because it were in the name of working class, the proletarians, the poor, etc. In terms of "body count" under Pinochet rule, the official number is 3000: terrorists killed by military, military men killed by terrorists, and ordinary people killed by political violence from two sides.
