Meanwhile, on Monday's episode of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer reported that WWE may be planning a small-scale raid of New Japan. According to Meltzer, WWE is going after Styles, current IWGP Intercontinental Champion Shinsuke Nakamura and former three-time IWGP tag team champions Doc Gallows and Karl Anderson.
Meltzer says where the four men are going to go, or when, is still "up in the air" at this time. He said that TNA was interested in Anderson, but WWE may have swooped in and grabbed him instead. Meltzer believes that if Nakamura signs with WWE, he will stay long enough to drop the Intercontinental Championship, so it won't be another situation like Alberto Del Rio signing with the company and not being allowed to drop his AAA Mega Championship.
Styles is one of the most-decorated wrestlers to have never been under contract with WWE. In addition to being a two-time IWGP Heavyweight Champion, he held the Pure Wrestling Championship and the World Tag Team Championship in Ring of Honor. For over a decade, he was synonymous with TNA. During his time with TNA, he was a three-time NWA World Heavyweight Champion, four-time NWA World Tag Team Champion, two-time TNA World Heavyweight Champion, six-time X Division Champion and two-time TNA Tag Team Champion, in addition to being the first TNA Triple Crown and Grand Slam Champion.
Nakamura is one of the biggest stars in all of Japan and a national celebrity. He is a five-time IWGP Intercontinental Champion, 3-time IWGP Heavyweight Champion, one-time Tag Team Champion and winner of the 2011 G1 Climax. He has publicly stated his interest in working for WWE several times.
Gallows may be well-known to WWE fans as Festus (one-half of Jesse and Festus) or Luke Gallows, former member of CM Punk's Straight Edge Society. His earliest claim to fame was as a "Fake Kane" in 2006.
Karl Anderson was a mainstay in Pro Wrestling Guerrilla before heading to New Japan, where he has worked steadily since 2008. In addition to his three IWGP tag titles with Gallows, he also won the titles with Giant Bernand, also known as Albert or Tensai (or current NXT head trainer Matt Bloom) in the WWE.
