What LOST Season Four's Premiere Might Look Like
what-lost-season-fours-premier-7441.aspx

With the total lack of news (or in Damon Lindelof's words and abundance of "Radio Silence") LOST fans can do little but speculate at this point. We know that LOST's show runners got the team together for a brain storming session and laid out the contours of the next forty eight episodes, we know that flash forwards will now be used in addition to flash backs, but we know little more than that. What's a LOST fan to do? Speculate, of course!

One thing that is surely to change is the rate at which threads are dealt with. In season two we spent a solid five episodes catching up on the various groups of characters in the wake of the hatch opening. Season three saw the infamous 'mini-pod,' a six episode resolution to the kidnapping that capped season two. We still don't know what happened to those poor souls in the arctic.

In those days, though, the series had plenty of time to deal with things. Eight more episodes to be precise. Now the series will have sixteen episodes to tell each of the final three pieces of the LOST story, fifteen if you consider the finale is usually a two hour episode. So loose threads will need to be tied together quickly. Let's take an inventory of what we have.

First on everybody's minds are the flash backs/flash forwards. We shouldn't worry too much about that concept. We're guaranteed fifteen pieces to that puzzle. The reason why Jack (Matthew Fox) was so desperate to get back to the island is probably NOT going to be a thread that we will see picked up immediately.

Right now, the people in the most precarious position are the folks on the beach. With 'help' on the way, the first people who will encounter the as-yet unknown Minkowski and company will be Sawyer (Josh Holloway), Jin (Daniel Dae Kim), Bernard, and Hurley (Jorge Garcia). Luckily they are in radio contact, something tells me they aren't going to have good news.

The next guy with an issue is Desmond (Henry Ian Cusick). He's deep below the sea at the moment, but luckily has plenty of scuba gear. What makes his position interesting is that he will have a unique point of view when he surfaces. He knows the people who are coming knew about him, but are not assigned by Penelope Widmore. The question is what - if anything - can he do about it?

Jack and company have Ben hostage, but will his knowledge of the approaching strangers force the group to work with Ben for their mutual survival; and where was John Locke (Terry O'quinn) heading? Has he fallen out of favor with Jack for good, or will he yet redeem himself.

Perhaps the most intriguing bit of info for some was the mention of The Others' destination, The Temple. Is the temple a remnant of the original people of the island? Why were The Other's heading there to begin with?

Altogether, it looks like the LOST crew has a lot to deal with in the first couple of episodes of LOST season four; but if the pace of LOST season threes second half is any indication, it looks like us fans are in for a hell of a ride.

Looking for the Answer to LOST? It's all in the HEMA
LOST fans are an eclectic creed, some are along for the ride, some are casually caught up in the mystery, and at the hardened core are the fans that will leave no stone unturned in the quest to find a theory that will "explain it all." Who knows who coined the term "Unified Theory of LOST," but the quest to define a scientific and philosophical context that explains the relationship between LOST's many mysterious conundrums has attracted a diverse and highly qualified set of individuals.

The goal is not an easy one. Already we are dealing with issues as diverse as life after death, manifestation of intent, time travel, and lets not forget intelligent mind reading clouds of death dealing judgment. It wasn't always this convoluted of course, in the pilot LOST's mysteries were pretty simple, what's the big beast in the jungle and, in the words on the dear-departed Charlie, "Where are we?" Things have gotten a lot more complicated since then. See a pattern yet?

The problem with crafting a theory that explains how the myriad mysteries of LOST's universe interconnect is that every episode seems to bring further murk to the mystery. Although LOST producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse have promised that it is all answers from here on out, we shouldn't expect that those answers aren't going to targeted towards evoking a massive "wow, I didn't think of that" factor. It's even possible that the solution to smaller mysteries could carry clues that complicate the 'end-game' solution even more. The stalwarts, however, are undaunted.

One such stalwart is Dr. Todd J. Hostager. There are a lot of LOST fan sites that invite open discussion of LOST theories, Hostager has created a comprehensive site which IS the theory. It's called The LOST Hema theory. HEMA, as you may have guessed, is an acronym, best explained by Hostager himself:

The HEMA acronym reflects this emphasis and it derives from the DHARMA acronym, specifically the "H" and the "MA". "H" refers to Heuristics, or the power of FOCUSED ATTENTION.The "MA" refers to Material Applications. The "E" stands for Energy. Simply put, HEMA Theory focuses on Heuristics (focused attention such as thoughts and emotions) channeled through the island's unique Energy field to produce tangible results in the world, or Material Applications. H-->E-->MA.

Hostager's take on the nature of the island and what forces are at play is far to complex to summarize here, but his eye for the clues scattered throughout the show makes a stunning case for his beliefs. Those interested can get a good primer of his theory here.

Has LOST's central mystery been solved? Perhaps the best question is, will the producers - with their ending of choice - confirm or deny anything with regards to the central construct of the universe in which LOST exists. It would almost seem a pity if LOST didn't resolve its story, but at the same time leave us with one grand mystery to debate for ourselves.

Minkowski y compañia sera sawyer , jin, bernard y hurley

Lost Season 3: Breaking All the Rules

Regardless of how well you do or do not understand what is going on while watching Lost – the Season 3 finale should have flipped you out. And if you are a Lost Theorist, it should have taught you to never write your theories in ink. I'm not sure "game changer" is a strong enough definition for what was dropped upon us in "Through the Looking Glass." Lost has never really followed the proverbial television rulebook as it is, but making the Jack-centric flashes scenes from the future, rather than from the past, broke some kind of Lost rulebook. So maybe the real lesson learned is that the Lost universe, as conjured up by Lost Labs, has no rules. At least, none that are restricted from eventually being broken.

Rather than "game changer," show runners Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse should have called it the "rule breaker." In fact, it was such a big rule breaker that they issued a moratorium against talking about the Lost Season 3 finale for months after the finale aired. It was like they knew that it would take the Lost fans that long to fully appreciate the mind-bending possibilities that one little decision – to press "FF" rather than "REW" on a character's lifestory (can't call it "backstory" anymore, can we?) – could have and most definitely will have on the series.

For me, a television show that is willing to take some risks and break some rules – even if it means possibly alienating a portion of its audience – is my kind of entertainment. A show that staunchly adheres to traditional (and safe) guidelines in the industry, or to its own "show bible," typically fades from my watch list within a season or two. It becomes too predictable – and with so many alternative entertainment sources available via the internet these days, predictability can be a show's death knell.

Lost was accused by some fans of shark-jumping because this twist was from so far out of the blue. So does that mean they were logically expecting the kidnapping of Walt by the Others at the end of Season 1? Or for Desmond to be living in the Hatch? As far out there as this notion of flash-forward storytelling seemed before it appeared on the screen, I believe in actuality it follows the most important rule of Lost – expect the unexpected.
