During last night’s Big Game, we got a big trailer (but with only a few new scenes) for
Captain America: Civil War. While there’s still no Spidey to be seen, Marvel is really making it hard for fans to remain united in the coming conflict. And that ominous chant of divided we fall couldn’t ring more true: Geek.com has learned about the death of a major player in the upcoming film.
This is a huge spoiler alert. If you don’t want to have a major plot of the film revealed, check out some good games
you can secretly play while at work, and check out the new
Civil War trailer below:
There have been many rumors surrounding major deaths that are set to occur in
Captain America: Civil War, including a rumor that the directors shot multiple death scenes to throw rabid fans off the scent. Complicating matters even more,
Civil War completed additional photography in January, allowing Marvel to further alter the nitty gritty details of the larger character arcs that will continue through the
Infinity War Avengers movies.
Although at least one cut exists where Steve Rogers disappears with his Avengers to fight another day, sources close to the production confirm that (as of now) when
Captain America: Civil War hits theaters, Crossbones will kill Steve Rogers by the end of the movie.
While many fans online have debated if Cap would follow the same fate as his comic book counterpart, it seems the Russo brothers and team are sticking to the comics. Like in the Fallen Son storyline (which happened to be the original name of this movie) that followed the Civil War crossover event, Crossbones (played in the movies by Frank Grillo) will be the one to do the deed.
In the books, Cap turns himself in to the authorities and that essentially ends the Civil War storyline. He was placed in jail, and when he was being led from the courthouse, he’s sniped by Crossbones and shot by a brainwashed Sharon Carter and apparently killed.
Falcon and Winter Soldier track the shooter and find it is none other than Crossbones. He tries to escape, but Bucky, in relentless fury, nearly beats Crossbones to death. Crossbones is eventually sent to prison for his crimes, but Steve Roger’s friends in the superhero community demand answers. Wolverine, Doctor Strange, and even the mostly lawful Daredevil break into the prison and attempt to interrogate Crossbones, but to no avail. He denies all of it, claiming he simply has no memory of shooting Captain America.
When Tony Stark learns of this, he decides to bring in a heavy hitter in the form of omega-level telepathic mutant Professor X. The brain scan finds gaping holes in Crossbones’ memory of the incident, leaving more questions than answers — and we haven’t even touched on Sharon Carter and Red Skull’s connection in all of this in the comics!
There are two key players that make this storyline work in the comics that would have to change for the film, since it doesn’t look like Marvel will be crossing over with Fox’s X-Men any time soon. The role of Wolverine could easily be replaced by any number of characters who have a tighter bond with Cap, like a certain flame-haired super spy under the codename Black Widow.
It’s unlikely that a re-work of the Fallen Son plot put into
Captain America: Civil War would include a Crossbones brain scan, but the future movies could see a larger expansion of the Scarlet Witch’s powers, or some awesome magic hoodoo from Doctor Strange. Really, for the Marvel-1999999 universe (the
Marvel Cinematic Universe), these players can easily be switched with characters known from the Marvel-helmed films, and the help build to the climactic events that will begin
Avengers: Infinity War.
With Cap dead in the first installment, what do our Avengers look like moving through the rest of Phase 3?
Another source close to the film told us that they have already fit Sebastian Stan for a Captain America costume
. Like in the comics, Bucky Barnes takes on the mantle of Captain America after Steve Rogers is apparently killed. You would think the honor would go to Sam Wilson, the Falcon (and current Captain America in the comic series), but there’s Marvel movies have a penchant for characters who feel the need to make up for all the red in their ledgers.
Of course, no one stays dead forever in comics (unless you’re Quicksilver), and the Marvel Cinematic Universe is no exception. Under Disney and being a box office juggernaut factory, Marvel has the power to alter course as their films weave in and out of production, but according to our sources, the current plan is to keep Steve Rogers out of the first
Infinity War entirely, letting characters like the Bucky Captain America and Spider-Man take the lead. Rogers would return, as you’d expect, for the grand climax.
The methods by which that could be accomplished in the massive movies that are
Infinity War are legion. Most likely: Marvel will make use of one of its central MacGuffins, the Infinity Stones. The Soul Stone (whereabouts still unknown on-screen) seems like a good possibility, but the Reality Stone (the Aether from
Thor: The Dark World) and the Time Stone (Kevin Feige has hinted this is The Eye of Agamotto in November’s
Doctor Strange) could do the trick.
When Thanos assembles the Infinity Gauntlet to court Death in the comics, one of his horrible acts with the god power is to instantly blink a large amount of the entire universe out of existence. With that kind of power, blinking Steve Rogers back to life isn’t the most far-fetched possibility for any character who can assemble the Gauntlet.
That’s all in the future, though! If
Captain America: Civil War really is Marvel’s best movie with test audiences ever like reports have suggested, then prepare to turn on the waterworks when it hits theaters on May 6.
